Drill-and-practice software allows learners to work problems or answer questions and get feedback on correctness. One example of drill-and-practice software is Earobics. Earobics could be used in the classroom as a work station for learners. Learners would practice phonological awareness and other reading readiness skills. The program would give immediate feedback and motivate learners to practice.
Tutorial software presents an entire instructional sequence, not just supplemental material. This type of software is beneficial because it is instruction on its own. Basic Algebra Shapeup is an example of tutorial software. This could be used in a work station for upper elementary students who are advanced and need to move on in math.
Simulation software models a real or imaginary system. Learners can see the impact of their actions. Learners get very involved with simulation software. The Oregon Trail simualtes a trip in the Old West in the 1890s. This would be great for getting students to understand about pioneer days.
Instructional game software allows competition in learning. These games are fun and motivating. Arthur's Math Games are useful in the classroom for math skills practice.
Problem-solving software can help students solve problems, create environments that challenge students to create solutions to complex problems, help develop component problem-solving skills, or give learners the opportunity for practice in solving content-area problems. This type of software is challenging and motivating. The Geometer's Sketchpad is a construction and exploration tool. Learners can draw objects, investigate their mathematical properties, analyze problems, propose solutions, and do proofs to test their hypotheses.
Integrated learning systems are networked or online systems of instruction that provide complete curricula on a topic area. Student progress is monitored and reports are created to summarize data. This type of software is great because it is personalized instruction matched to student needs. The CompassLearning Odyssey Manager is an example of integrated learning systems.

Week 2
The Digital Divide and funding for educational technology are two issues shaping the role of technology in education. The Digital Divide is the terminology used to describe how technology is widening the gap between poor and rich people. Wealthier people have money to buy technology equipment quicker than poor people. Poor people often have to use technology that is available to the public, such as technology at public schools and libraries. Also, the technology that is used by poor people is often limited to the basics, like a computer. Funding for educational technology is critical. Our students need to be experienced in techology to compete in today's world. However, the lack of funding limits exposure and experience.
One thing that we have learned from the past about educational technology is that teachers will always be more important than technology. What we really need is teachers that are prepared in technology. Human interaction will always be at the core of learning.

Week 1
Hello!
I am Spring Bradley from Frisco City, Alabama. I currently teach 2nd grade at Excel School in Excel, Alabama. I already have my master's degree in school counseling. However, since I do not have one year experience in that field, I cannot get my education specialist degree. So, I am working on my master's degree in elementary education. Once I receive that, I will begin working on my education specialist degree in elementary education. My favorite thing about technology is that it is a fast way to connect to other people.
